Watch where you're going....!

by Alun Email

I was walking down the road the other day and, for some reason that I can't remember, I looked back the way I'd come while still walking forward. It was like something out of a comedy scene - I walked into a lamp post! Ow ow ow! I had to laugh. Indeed I did. I kept laughing as I walked right through the village and up to the heath. Lord knows what people thought seeing a me walking alone and just laughing out loud!

So, you'd agree then that it makes a huge amount of sense to look forward to where you're going rather than looking behind you whilst in motion!

It's similar with life. As we move through life, our attention really would be better placed in front of us and to where we're heading rather than keep looking back to where we've been. Otherwise, we hit the proverbial lamp post. But so often we don't look forward. We keep harping back to the journey. Focusing on the lumps and bumps of what has happened without paying attention to the ones that are coming up. So we hit them without preparation and look back again to see what we hit! It's a never ending circle.

Of course there's nothing wrong with stopping and taking a look back to review how far we've come and what obstacles we've managed to deal with. It's also important to see how well we're doing. BUT, do it standing still. Take some time out to review rather than try to keep moving forward while looking back. Then begin forward motion again.

It's also like driving a car. We have a rear view mirror to see what traffic is coming up behind us so that we can drive safely without being hit or causing accidents. But we don't drive while permanently looking in the rearview mirror - most of the time is spent looking out in front. Use the rear view mirror to help you but look forward when moving forward.

Where are you putting most of you attention? Are you heading for a traffic light that's on red that you can't see because you're spending too much time looking in the mirror? Do you need to stop and then look back at where you've come from and how far? Give yourself permission to think about this and then adjust things accordingly :)
